Alessandro Cortini Releases Hazy, Atmospheric New Song “Iniziare”

Alessandro Cortini, most well known for his contributions to Nine Inch nails, has just released a new song titled, “Iniziare.” The song is a part of his impending album AVANTI, which will be released this Friday (October 6th). This will be Cortini’s sixth solo venture as an artist.

Cortini was born and raised in Bologna Italy, and studied music at the Musician’s Institute in California. He began touring with Mayfirled Four as a guitarist from 2001-2002. Shortly after in 2005, Cortini auditioned for nine Inch Nails. He got a gig touring for them in 2005 and eventually went on to record with them in 2008 and 2013. He has also spent time touring with Muse, contributing to the Nine Inch Nails spin off band How To Destroy Angels and producing for the duo, Ladytron.

While he may be most well known for his work in Nine Inch Nails, Cortini has spent a great of his career working on collaborations and solo projects. This year, he has collaborated with Merzbow and Daniel Avery on unique projects. As a solo artist he released a trilogy of double LP’s from 2013 to 2015 called Forse. This year he has already released two albums called Sonno and Risveglio. The experimental albums started as sleep aids that Cortini would play while on tour, and turned into fully developed projects that explore the border between sleepy soundscapes and wakeful melodies.

His upcoming 2017 album, will also be experimental: AVANTI will explore memories. Cortini nostalgically reflects on his life by using home videos from his grandfather’s archive as a visual aid for his tracks. The various videos stir powerful emotions that are reflected throughout each of the seven songs. The tracks combine moments of melancholy with moments of ecstasy and pure joy to evokes an overall bittersweet feeling. Although the album translates to “Forward,” In Italian, Cortini spends the album looking back.

“Iniziare,” is a powerful mix of dark and light. The dizzying strings add charm and innocence, while the recurring bass line adds a tinge of sadness.
