This coming November, Cut Copy is set to perform at the Shrine Expo Hall for their North American tour. Coming out on Nov. 10, the band will be supporting their first album since 2013, Haiku From Zero. The album, which came out late last month, also came out with a correlating single titled “Black Rainbows.”
The new album is described by NPR Music as “magnificently ambitious.” Pitchfork called Cut Copy “band of fans,” describing the album as complex, hiding “a nugget of anxiety and sadness under every cheerful melody.” Cut Copy will be supported by Palmbomen II at the all ages event.
Australian Dan Whitford started Cut Copy in 2001 as a solo bedroom recording project before evolving into an entire band. Whitford, who is from Melbourne, had a different career set in motion before Cut Copy took off. Running a local design studio and dabbling in club culture at night is what he was doing. After gathering together band members to perform live, Cut Copy went to work. Within a decade, they’ve become an international hit.
They have released four studio albums, an EP and a plethora of singles and eclectic remixes, all via Modular Recordings. In 2004, they released their debut album Bright Like Neon Love. The album achieved minimal commercial success but received very favorable reviews from music critics.
The band first broke through in 2008 with the success of their second album, In Ghost Colors. Pitchfork named the album one of the 50 best albums of the year. After three years, the band put out their third album Zonoscope (2011), which peaked at number 10 on the US Billboard Top Rock Albums chart. Next came Free Your Mind (2013), which received favorable reviews.
