According to Pitchfork, in a tribute to Tom Petty who died late Monday night, The National covered one of his songs on social media. Bryce Dessner shared video on Instagram of lead singer Matt Berninger and himself covering “Damaged by Love,” a song from Petty’s 2006 album Highway Companion. Dessner strums away at the guitar while Berninger sits along side him, thumping his hands to the beat, both doing the song justice. The sentimental acoustic cover can be seen below.

A lot of well-known artists including Bob Dylan, Ezra Koenig, Paul McCartney, Ryan Adams and Lorde, who were obviously inspired by Petty’s talent have all shared commemorations. Coldplay covered “Free Fallin’” at their show late last night.

Dessner also shared a video of Berninger dancing to Petty’s original track.

Amber Washington: Graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, majored in Media & Professional Communication. I play tennis and am always on the lookout for new music, very grateful for Apple Music. I composed music for a few months in college while living in New York which further sparked my passion for a career in the music industry. Live music is one of my all time favorite things to experience; First Avenue is my favorite venue, might be bias since I was born and raised in Minnesota. Happy ears, happy years.
