Lawrence Rothman At The Bootleg Theater 11/10

Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and producer Lawrence Rothman announced their debut album The Book of Law, arriving Oct. 13 through Downtown Records/Interscope. In support of the album, Rothman has jumped on tour. Angelenos, who only get one night to catch the music, can look out for their upcoming show Nov. 10. Kicking the tour off in San Diego two days before the big release, Rothman will travel across the coast and stop by Canada before coming back to LA at the Bootleg Theater. To top it off, Rothman will be performing at the Bar Stage. It sounds like a perfect Friday night out with friends or a date.

A multi-instrumentalist musician and visual artist, Rothman derives influences from the likes of Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits, the writings of Sam Pink and the art of Mike Kelly, according to the Bootleg Theater. According to their Facebook page, they began their work back in 2013. Their music and message are like none other: Rothman is gender fluid and identifies with 9 “alters,” according to a press release. It’s not a split personality type of thing, the press release notes, but they are characters that he dresses up and portrays that are just as much him as he himself.

They play all of their shows as one of the alters. The alters are always present throughout the entire project, even becoming a large part of the music videos they put out. Sometimes Rothman will portray an Albino individual or a bald, tattooed metal head, a beat up hipster or actress Elizabeth Taylor, just to name a few.

Their debut album, produced by Justin Raisen, YVES, and Rothman, features contributions from Angel Olsen (“California Paranoia”), Marissa Nadler, Guns N’ Roses’ Duff McKagan, Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa, Kristin Kontrol, and others, according to Pitchfork.

Their recent music video, titled “Wolves Still Cry,” was directed by Floria Sigismondi, who has done work for David Bowie, Bjork, Marilyn Manson, a couple episodes of Handmaids tale and more.
