Flying Lotus Scores New Blade Runner 2022 Animated Short Film

Flying Lotus will be a part of an animated short film Blade Runner 2022. This connects to the upcoming Blade Runner 2049.

According to Pitchfork, Blade Runner 2049 will be out on October 6th. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the film is about a young blade runner’s discovery that leads him to a quest to track a former blade runner that’s been missing for 30 years. The film stars Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling. The film almost included Johann Johannsson due to a legal Non Disclosure Agreement. Instead, he was replaced by Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch as composers.

Blade Runner 2022 was written and directed by Shinichiro Watanbe of Cowboy Bepop. The animated film is said to be somewhere in between the original 1982 film, which was set in 2019, and the upcoming film, which was set in 2049.

The artist had released a series of tweets about the film. At first he states “Doing something with Watanabe was a dream of mine. Cowboy Bebop is one of the greatest!” In the next tweet, he talks about wanting to get kuedo and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson involved and being proud of his work. The third quote states “When I saw a rough cut of 2022 the temp music was from my past albums. Seeing Blade Runner imagery set to my music was a beautiful feeling”.
