Sony has been sued over the use of T. Rex song “Debora” in the potentially award winning Baby Driver. From the movie, the movie’s track producer will be performing at screenings.
Baby Driver is a film about a young driver that has a great love for music, who is forced into working for a kingpin. In this film, Sony Pictures dealt with the worldwide distribution of the movie, along with TriStar Pictures in the U.S.
The copyright lawsuit was filed on Thursday by Rolan Feld, also known as the son of frontman Marc Bolan, stating that there was a lack in a license to clear the use for the song. With this lack of license, he battles companies that dealt with the productions of the films such as Sony, Media Rights Capitals, Bambino Films and others. Feld has done filed a similar law suit three years ago to protect his father’s work over his classic songs.
According to Stereogum, the filed complain states that Sony has not done anything to fix the problem, saying “In the six weeks since Feld brought this infringement to Defendant Sony’s attention, Defendants have done little more than point fingers at one another — and they have neither apologized nor offered to pay Feld a reasonable license fee.” The statment continues to say that Sony has only responded to the situation, by having “conflicting explanations”, blaming other parties, and requesting more time for investigation.
The film makers have stressed the importance of the soundtrack. In an interview with Edgar Wright, the writer-director, had stated to Variety, “Even before the movie was at Sony, we had sort of quietly started clearing the tracks. Because, you know, if you’re going to do a movie called Baby Driver and try and use that song, you should approach them way ahead of time to make sure that that’s okay.”
