Wavves @ Mohawk 5/28

The surf/punk rock mosh-pit attraction, Wavves, all started in 2008 by Nathan Williams. Williams had started the shin-dig as a recording project, but he received a lot of attraction after releasing his first album Wavves. Once the word was out, Williams and Ryan Ulsh (touring drummer) hit the road for a US and European tour. There was a bit of drama on the road which caused a cancellation of the European tour and Ulsh leaving the band. After a few members had come and gone, the band currently contains Nathan Williams (vocals), Alex Gates (guitar), Stephen Pope (bass) and Brian Hill (drums).

Throughout the bands existence, the four-piece has released five studio albums, a few EPs and a collaboration album with Cloud Nothings. Pitchfork describes their latest album that was released in October 2015, “V sounds like a hangover.” It’s no surprise the album sounds like it was made in a drunken state with the fact that it was inspired by a breakup. It isn’t every day that a band can say their song is a part of a popular video game, but Wavves sure can. Their hit song, “Nine is God,” is featured on Grand Theft Auto V.

Wavves made announcements on twitter this past December about the release date of their upcoming album. You’re Welcome will be out on May 19, 2017. They have already released three singles from the new record, “Animal,” “Daisy” and “You’re Welcome,” fans can check them out on their bandcamp or Spotify. Williams’ supposedly had spent so many hours working on the record that there was a total of 40 songs, which is pretty wicked. After cutting out over half of the songs, the record is composed of twelve songs that have snappy 50s harmonies, 60s beach boys theme and 70s psychedelic inspiration to them.

Don’t miss out on the mosh-pit fun during Wavves’ set at Mohawk on May 28th
