Swet Shop Boyz @ The Echoplex 4/20

There’s a familiar uniqueness to the Swet Shop Boyz.  The Indian-American/Pakistani-British hiphop group seamlessly blends together their native sounds with modern New York street flavor.  Their humble beginnings began the same way more and more connections begin, the internet, Twitter, specifically.  MC Riz (an accomplished actor who can be seen in films and TV shows  such as The Night Of, Nightcrawler, and Star Wars: Rogue One) released a record that caught the attention of the Heems (formally half of Das Racist).  The two began a correspondence and when Riz needed to research a south-asian living in NY for a role he had landed in 2014, Heems took him right in even inviting Riz to stay with his family.  The two wrote and recorded a four track EP and titled it “Swet Shop” and the rest as they say, is history.

Fast forward two years and the duo had decided to bring in British producer Redinho to begin working on a full-length album.  Due to the distance that separated the group and the conflicting schedules, Redinho produced all of the instrumentals before sending them off to Heems and Riz who began writing the lyrics when they first heard the music Redinho had sent them.  This album, rather this glorious garment, was aptly titled “Cashmere” and was released in late 2016 that saw a peak position of #45 on the Billboard Rap/Hiphop charts.

The Swet Shop Boyz are now taking their NY/Pakistani/British/Indian Punjabi Cashmere swag and churning out shows on the regular across the world.  With stops in NYC, Barcelona, London and Berlin, the Boys will be rocking the stage here at the Echoplex on April 20th and you can catch them sewing up beats and rhymes at Coachella!
