LISTEN: Devin Townsend Project Release New Song “Stormbending”

Earlier this year in May, the diverse metal act Devin Townsend Project, announced that it will be dropping their 7th LP Transcendence on September 9th. Since the announcement, the band has dropped 2 singles, “Failure” and “Secret Sciences,” and it seems like the prolific artist has graced us once again with their third single “Stormbending.”

The band is led by Canadian musician/producer (obviously) Devin Townsend, and it has built quite a reputation for itself by being very experimental and exploring diverse genres across their records, while still being strongly rooted in its metal background. Townsend is also known for his work in other projects, most notably his country rock act Casualties of Cool.

Transcendence will be follow up to 2014’s  double LP (half of which comprised of the Devin Townsend Project full-length Sky Blue), and the pressure is on.

On the process of creating the record, Townsend commented that he was exploring a relatively new way of working, collaborating with the entire project during the writing stages of the record. “The result of this process is a record that I truly think the intention of is special,” he says of the album. “I ‘found’ gas to put into the tank and am glad I did. I think the intention, the theme, and the participation of everyone involved allows this album to act like a fulcrum between the past few years and what I intend to do next with the symphony. I am very proud of it and everyone involved.”

The Transcendence artwork was created by Anthony Clarkson, whom Townsend has been working with for several years at this point. Townsend commented on the cover: “[Anthony] presented me the main image of the girl as a painted version, and I was intrigued and asked him to redo it with a girl he knew with photos. I liked the idea that it seemed like a mashup of religious and spiritual imagery, in a sense, representing the idea (to me) that these types of connections to the infinite are often more like identities we can cling to rather than what lies behind. In a sense, the character on the front almost seems like the ideologies she’s representing are more ‘brand names’ than anything else.”

As soon as the album drops, the Devin Townsend Project will be joining up with Between the Buried and Me for the “Transcending: The Coma Tour” this fall, along with Fallujah.
