There are many ways you can describe Jack White with. He’s prolific, he’s loud, and he’s most definitely talented. But one word perhaps fits him better than most others: he’s busy. He constantly has something large on his plate, from recording Stevie Wonder classics with the muppets to planning on playing vinyl records in space (yes, that is real).
So it’s hard to imagine that the artist has the time to create or release music, but of course, Jack White is not one to disappoint. After announcing that he will be releasing a collection of acoustic recordings of himself, aptly named Jack White Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016, last month, White has returned with a striking acoustic mix of the Raconteurs’ epic murder ballad, “Carolina Drama.”
The previously unreleased version retains much of the same eerie instrumentation heard on the original, which closed the Raconteurs’ 2008 LP Consolers of the Lonely. But without Patrick Keeler’s drums, “Carolina Drama” takes on a sparse backcountry feel, fraught with fiddle scrapes and the tinny twang of acoustic guitar strings while the harrowing chanting that carries the song to its end roils underneath.
Jack White Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016 will be out September 9th via White’s own Third Man Records, and will feature B-sides, remixes and alternate versions of tracks from throughout White’s career alongside the previously unreleased White Stripes song, “City Lights.” The song was originally written for Get Behind Me Satan, but wasn’t finished until this year. According to a press release, this track is the first new, worldwide commercially released song from White Stripes since 2008.
