Electronic rock duo, Phantogram, who recently released collaborative album with Big Boi (under the name Big Gram) and who also partnered up with A-Track to produce their collaborative song “Parallel Lines” most recently, have just released a new studio track titled “You Don’t Get Me High Anymore”, which premiered on the Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 Radio show earlier today.
This news, coming from PrettyMuchAmazing, is following the duo’s most recent tour announcement and new album Three, which ends Phantogram’s 2-year drought of new music. Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter had sat down for an interview with Pitchfork to discuss the new music. “It’s a lot more fucking boombastic and heavy,” Sarah Barthel said over the phone. “I think the record, to us, is about heartbreak. We’ve kind of had a tough year, so a lot of inspiration and drive came from our own experiences.”
When asked what the inspiration for the song was, Carter claimed it was “Metaphorically, it’s about addiction.”, with Barthel clarifying “Basically, wanting to feel something strong and doing whatever it takes to feel it again, because you know it feels good and you miss it” resembling a strong addiction.
Being sample-heavy, peppered in with dark lyrics, the track makes for an emotional journey of sound. “Musically it’s a new progression of Phantogram, of what we do. It’s funky and it’s dark.” says Carter. “It turned out to be a really awesome thing and we’re really proud of it and really pumped for everyone to hear it.” finished Barthel. The song was co-written by Ricky Reed, the executive producer behind the forthcoming album.
The new track is nothing short of strong from this electronic duo, who seemed to constantly be trying to push their own envelope to new and improved music, their upcoming tour is sure to provide even more new tracks from the two in a grand live setting.
