311 is an American band that is generally labeled as alternative rock. They are also classified as rap rock, rap metal, funk rock, funk metal, reggae, and jazz fusion. In short, they use multiple musical genres to create a unique sound. The band’s name originates from the police code for indecent exposure in Omaha, Nebraska, after the original guitarist was arrested for streaking. 311 has released ten studio albums, one live album, one greatest hits album and three DVDs. They have sold over 8.5 million albums in the U.S., and seven of their albums have reached Top 10 on Billboard’s Top 200 Sales Chart.

In 1992, 311 signed to Capricorn Records and released the albums Music (1993) and Grassroots (1994), which both received moderate success. In 1995, they released a self-titled album, which reached No. 12 on Billboard 200 and eventually went triple platinum. The two hit singles off of their self-titled album were “Down” and “All Mixed Up.” “Down” reached No. 1 on Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks in 1996. Their next 3 albums, Transistor (1997), Soundsystem (1999) and From Chaos (2001), did not reach the success of their self-titled album, but were successful in general. Transistor went platinum, while Soundsystem and From Chaos were certified gold.

Their most recent album, Stereolithic, was released in March of this year (2014). The first single off of the album was “Five of Everything.” Within the first week of record sales the album reached No. 6 on Billboard 200. Support acts for 311 have included Sublime with Rome, Cypress Hill, The Offspring, Slightly Stoopid, Snoop Dogg, The Roots, Papa Roach, The Wailers, O.A.R., Matisyahu and Ziggy Marley.
