Electropop group Icona Pop and electronic duo Louis the Child have released a new single, “Weekend”, and its accompanying video. This marks Icona Pop’s second single released this year, and their first collaboration with Louis the Child.
“Weekend’s” first half employs the minimalist production tendencies Louis the Child are known for. Strong base alternates with handclaps, pushing Icona Pop’s dual vocalists’ power pop vocals to the forefront of the mix. The song then drops into swirling synths and lighter base, swinging back and forth from maximalist to minimalist production.
The single’s lyrics reflect the production’s relative lightness. Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo voice their excitement for the upcoming weekend, and their hope that their audience will join the upcoming party. “Weekend’s” video is similarly playful, featuring Hjelt partying with shirtless men in clubs and cars.
Icona Pop last released an LP in 2013 (This is…Icona Pop), and issued a three song EP in 2015 (Emergency EP). They are currently touring, and will likely release a new LP shortly.
“Weekend” continues Louis the Child’s steady output of singles and remixes. While they have never issued an official LP, they consistently post remixes and original productions on Soundcloud. They have garnered praise from multiple industry staples, including pop luminaries Taylor Swift and Lorde.
