American rock band The Flaming Lips have just released the tour dates to their upcoming 2016 Spring tour, announced today have been shows at Carnegie Hall on March 31st and Radio City Music Hall on April first, to join the star-studded linup honoring the late David Bowie. Also announced, while in New York for these concerts, the group intends to perform on the Late Night with Stephen Colbert stage, on March 30th, in order to perform Bowie’s classic “Space Oddity” Live. Recently coming off several experimental projects, the psychedelic rock group is looking to take their tour by force and perform some stellar shows around the countries festival circuit.
Going through plenty of evolution throughout the years, the Lips have had a revolving door of members coming in and out of the band, starting off with Wayne Coyne who has remained in the band the entire time. Coyne and his brother Mark (vocals) joined bassist Michael Ivins and performed several shows trying out different drummers, until they landed on Richard English, after which they recorded the only release Mark ever lead vocals on The Flaming Lips. Wayne took over Mark’s absence, and together with the band, they recorded their first full length album Hear It Is. Currently the band’s lineup is comprised of Wayne Coyne (vocals and multi-instramentalist), Michael Ivins (Bass), Steven Drozd (Songwriter and Multi-instrumentalist) Jake Ingalls, and Derek Brown
The band was known for its association with the 60’s and 70’s psychedelic subculture, permeating through the band’s instrumentation, effects, and composition. Coyne’s lyrics lead the way in the band’s theme, with lyrics that embody his fascination with science fiction and space opera generes of fiction that were popular in that psychedelic era. Constantly experimenting with new ideas and ways to change things up, The Lips are always looking to push the envelope with their sound. The band has just recently finished several side projects, one being the experimental Miley Cyrus & her Dead Petz, a collaborative album they did with Miley Cyrus, comprised of 23 free tracks which was made available via online download on Aug 30th, 2015, it was described by Coyne to Rolling Stone as a combination of Pink Floyd and Portishead, adding it was “a slightly wiser, sadder, more true version” to the standard Cyrus pop music output.
Along with this tour announcement, fans will be excited to hear that The Lips will be releasing two very coveted items on April 16th, on this Record Store Day the band will release their two RSD releases. One of which features an alternate mix of the Clouds Taste Metallic album featuring ex-Flaming Lips guitarist, Ronald Jones. Contains an original comic written and illustrated by Wayne Coyne. The second release features the companion piece to the first Heady Nuggs: The First 5 Warner Bros. Records 1992-2002 Box Set. This five-album (on eight discs) limited-edition Box Set is a RSD exclusive comprised of:At War With The Mystics (2006), Once Beyond Hopelessness(Christmas On Mars film soundtrack) (2008), Embryonic (2009), The Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs with Henry Rollins and Peaches Doing The Dark Side of the Moon (2009), The Flaming Lips And Heady Fwends(2012).
