American metal band Mastodon played a secret show last night in Atlanta. According to Stereogum, yesterday’s performance at The Earl in Atlanta is not the first time the band had done so, with them performing a 2024 hometown warmup show under the name Big Hairy Elephant. This recent secret show, however, saw the band playing alongisde Baroness’ John Baizley and live debuting many songs from their recently released Marrow Deep album as well as playing other tracks for the first time in years.

The show began with the live debut of “Barbarians Blood” from Marrow Deep, with additional live debuts for “In the Ruins” and “Poisonous Weapons” coming later. other hihglights include “Curl of The Burl” being played for the first time since 2013, the first playing of “Colony of Birchmen” since 2018 and “Oblivion” for the first time since 2019. Mastodon played a total of 14 tracks, with Baizley joining for the last 6 of the show. Baizley previously played alongside the band in 2010.
The release of Marrow Deep saw controversy recently as the estate of former bandmate Brent Hinds sued Mastodon over the alleged use of the likeness of the late guitarist. Hinds left the band in 2025 and passed away following a motorcycle accident later that year in August, with Marrow Deep being the band’s first release since his passing.
The band’s upcoming Poisonous Weapons Tour is set to begin on Wednesday in Orlando, alongside Deafheaven and Alcest.
