Soul, Reborn, Dynamic.
St. Paul & The Broken Bones deliver their sixth studio album, titled St. Paul & The Broken Bones, via their own label, Oasis Pizza Records (distributed by Thirty Tigers), on October 10, 2025 (via Noise11).
Founded in Birmingham, Alabama in 2011, the group comprises vocalist Paul Janeway, bassist Jesse Phillips, guitarist Browan Lollar, drummer Kevin Leon, keyboardist Al Gamble, trumpeter Allen Branstetter, trombonist Chad Fisher and saxophonist Amari Ansari. Their 2014 debut Half the City established their retro-soul aesthetic and earned comparisons to the great southern soul acts recorded in nearby Muscle Shoals (via Live for Live Music).
St. Paul & The Broken Bones was recorded at the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals with producer Eg White, who has worked with artists such as Adele and Sam Smith. As Noise11 reports, “The philosophy was simple — best song wins.”
Frontman Janeway described the project’s genesis in a Relix interview: “I was sitting in my living room, drinking a Mexican Coca-Cola and having some sushi — as on-point as it can be — with my wife and little girl. I felt, ‘Man, this is a great place.’ You know how you have moments that feel like a warm bath? This is one of them.” That moment inspired the album’s lead single “Sushi and Coca-Cola,” which topped Billboard’s Adult Alternative Airplay chart (via 999 The Buzz).
Glide Magazine writes that “By shaving off their more experimental edges, the group can fall into a few middle-of-the-road soul-pop numbers …” before highlighting track eight: “‘Seagulls’ is better, mixing keys, clean guitar strums and a dynamite trumpet solo around the effortless, head-bopping groove and Janeway’s vocals.”
According to Iowa Public Radio, “The new St. Paul & The Broken Bones is the band’s sixth album, and the first on their own label… That level of control might have something to do with the sense of renewal that comes across over the course of these ten songs.”
Listeners have embraced St. Paul & The Broken Bones as a powerful return to form. Fans on social media and Reddit threads praised the record’s “warm, vintage energy” and Janeway’s commanding live vocals (via Reddit). The lead single, “Sushi and Coca-Cola,” reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Alternative Airplay chart reflects strong audience enthusiasm and radio traction (via 999 The Buzz). While some longtime followers may miss the band’s experimental edge from The Alien Coast, most responses celebrate the renewed focus on classic soul craftsmanship and emotional depth.
St. Paul & The Broken Bones captures a band rediscovering its roots without losing its spark. The album’s polished production, tight musicianship and heartfelt songwriting showcase why the group continues to thrive in modern soul. It may not reinvent their sound, but it reinforces what makes them essential powerful vocals, rich horns and songs built to last.
