The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association announced the addition of the Roots Picnic: Hip-Hop is the Love of My Life to the Hollywood Bowl 2024 season. The event will debut on the West Coast at the iconic Los Angeles venue on Saturday, June 29.
Produced in cooperation with Live Nation Urban, this inaugural event will see The Roots invite their musical heroes and peers such as special guests Queen Latifah, Common, Digital Planets, Arrested Development, The Pharcyde, Black Sheep, and more to celebrate the five incredible decades of hip-hop. More artists are to be announced as the date approaches.
The Roots are now best recognized as the house band on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The Grammy Award-winning group take a huge part in hip-hop history, so much so that they are behind some of the bigger hip-hop festivals. In 2007 the Roots Picnic launched with featured artists such as The Weekend, Pharrell, Snoop Dogg, Nas, A$AP Rocky, and more. Last year’s Roots Picnic featured a three-day event in Philadelphia with artists Lauryn Hill, a surprise reunion of the Fugees alongside Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel.
“The first time we played Hollywood Bowl was way back in 2011, and there was nothing like it,” said The Roots’ Questlove in a press release. “We came back to headline in 2019, and we’ve been talking about doing something there since. This idea for Hip-Hop is the Love of My Life came up, and we knew there was no better spot.”
