Wayne Kramer, guitarist and founder of pioneering rock bands MC5, Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, Ozomatli’s Paul Pacheco and friends will perform at Rock Out! 6 on Saturday, April 29 in the Fairfax District of Los Angeles, California to celebrate Kramer’s 75th birthday and the 15th anniversary of the nonprofit Jail Guitar Doors (JGD). The show will benefit JGD’s newly launched Community Arts Programming and Outreach Center (C.A.P.O.).
This event will not only celebrate Kramer’s 75th birthday as it features an online auction with one-of-a-kind items. Auction items include: a Nile Rodgers-signed guitar, a gold suit worn on stage by Bauhaus and Love and Rockets cofounder David J, a VIP package for a performance by Rodrigo y Gabriela at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood, a piano/keyboard lesson from renowned keyboardist Roger Joseph Manning Jr., an Epiphone guitar autographed by Colbie Caillat, an exclusive photographic print signed by Deadmau5, autographed LA Rams jerseys, sports memorabilia, concert packages, and more. The online auction will be held from April 24 through May 1 supporting the Fresh Tracks program, a 12-week music and film production workshop held at The C.A.P.O. Center in central LA.
Proceeds from the live performance will go towards JGD’s new C.A.P.O. Center. JGD is a nonprofit founded by Kramer, his wife Margaret Saadi Kramer and fellow activist and troubadour Billy Bragg. JGD provides music and arts education to incarcerated individuals nationwide as well as marginalized youth and advocates for the reform of the criminal justice system. JGD has over 205 facilities nationwide and was inspired by Kramer’s own personal experience putting on performances for fellow inmates when serving a prison sentence in the 1970s. Its new program C.A.P.O. Center offers creative alternatives to vulnerable, under-resourced populations through music education and arts activities.
The C.A.P.O. Center also features student-run C.A.P.O. Café that will open to the public in spring 2023. JGD invites the community to visit the café, the recording studio and event space at the C.A.P.O. Center Open House before the concert on April 29 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. featuring live musical performances and family-friendly activities including graffiti art workshops and breakdancing from hip hop charity No Easy Props. There will also be various food and drink concessions. The open house is free and open to the neighboring community.
