Rock band The Flaming Lips have added two additional shows to their space bubble concert dates due to popular demand. The shows follow the band’s success of the two previous space bubble concert dates that occurred last month.
The band announced their idea for their COVID safe concert back in November when they had originally planned to play two dates; November 3 and December 11 but had to postpone their dates due to the rise in COVID cases. The dates were then announced for January 22 and January 23.
In an interview with mxdwn last year, the band’s very own Wayne Coyne was asked about any future tour dates with the band and he explained how they would implement the bubbles and were able to pull off securing the Oklahoma City venue for future concerts. “Yeah, I think that this venue that we’re using in Oklahoma City—that’s where you’re speaking with me from. Oklahoma City where I live—we know the people. We’ve actually played shows there and it’s like a lot of venues around America, sitting there virtually empty. And so they’ve allowed us to go in there and start to use it and play around and see how it’ll all work, and there’s a lot of areas where you can do staging and you can have a big distance between people in lines and they have big bathrooms and all these things that make it a really great spot to try this out. So I think we’re going to announce after the election that we are gonna put one show up for sale, and that show will happen at the beginning of December and then we’ll see what happens.”
The band’s first two shows had made media buzz across all platforms. The New York Times reported, “Band members and concertgoers rocked out and bounced while encased in large individual plastic bubbles amid bright swirling lights in trippy scenes at concerts on Friday and Saturday in Oklahoma City. The band has taken the elaborate precautions at its live performances to protects against the transmission of the coronavirus.”
At the announcement of the first bubble shows last year tickets sold out in minutes. After being rescheduled, the first two dates also sold out and followed all COVID precautions. Take a look at the band’s performance of their song “Brother Eye” below:
The two new shows are set for Friday, March 12 and Saturday, March 13 at The Criterion in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Tickets will go on sale Wednesday at 10 a.m. To purchase tickets, click here.
