French indie pop outfit Phoenix have released a new song “Identical,” which is set to be featured on the upcoming Sofia Coppola directed film On The Rocks. The film is set to be released this October via select theaters and Apple TV+ and will star Bill Murray, Rashida Jones and Marlon Wayans.
The group has also released a music video for “Identical,” which was directed by Roman Coppola, Sofia Coppola’s brother, who also directed the group’s videos for “Funky Squaredance,” “Long Distance Call” and “Everything Is Everything.” This simple visual shows a white jacket with the band name Phoenix written with a rainbow design burning. The song itself is an upbeat synth pop track, with catchy melodic synth lines, a steady dance rhythm and pop vocals that put the listener into a rhythmic trance.
This is the band’s first release since their 2018 single “Monologue,” which followed their 2017 LP Ti Amo. “These French boys worked in elements from the last Muñoz family reunion, and it actually continues to evolve the funky Chromeo vibes into a loving cheeseball daydream,” mxdwn reviewer Alex Muñoz wrote.
One of their 2009 hits, “Lisztomania” saw huge streaming numbers in 2019, after it appeared in a viral video depicting U.S. Congresswoman dancing Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez dancing. This video was originally recorded while the congresswoman was attending college and depicts her dancing to the track on a rooftop.
The group also made an appearance at the Just Like Heaven Festival back in 2019, which saw many prominent performers including Passion Pit and Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
