The concept album is a dying breed. In the modern era of music where the playlist single is king, there isn’t as much demand for a strong, narrative driven album like The Wall anymore. Luckily the world of punk and metal is still clamoring for such records, which has opened the door for some of the most creative works of music to come out in this century, and no band has embraced this ethos quite so much as Thrice.
Existing in the world of punk and post hardcore, Thrice and contemporaries like The Dear Hunter and Coheed and Cambria have dedicated themselves to massive, multi album concepts that stretch across their discography like narrative tapestries. These albums, which include the unimpeachable Alchemy Index series by Thrice, have reinforced their music with something that extends far beyond sonic excitement (though there is plenty of that) by allowing the listeners imagination to paint a picture of characters and fascinating worlds.
That this show is being played out in Pomona is no mistake. While the city isn’t particularly close to Los Angeles (certainly farther than one would want to drive) it has become known for excellent post hardcore and emo shows over the past twenty years. In fact the Fox Theater and the nearby Glass House have hosted many of the aforementioned bands and continue to serve as a haven for artistically minded storytellers in the world of music.
There’s no reason we should walk away from the concept album. Sure some of it can come across as corny or overly sincere but were it not for those who are overly sincere, so much of art would be dull irony. Thrice have repeatedly proven themselves as one of the most interesting bands in rock music, and it’s absolutely worth the trek to Pomona to catch a show by them.
