Emo is having a bit of a comeback as of late. Between its rather unfulfilling phase in pop punk (My Chemical Romance and Jimmy Eat World notwithstanding) and its massive burst of popularity through the mid ‘90s and early 2000’s one had to assume that emo would be breaking onto the scene once again, I mean twenty-somthing’s are always upset about one thing or another. Luckily the modern era of emo is taking a cue from the most successful bands in the genre, and not the ones that tried to make it big.
Joyce Manor in particular has been one of the most interesting bands to be described as emo in recent years. They possess a more hard edged punky style to their sound than many bands that would typically be considered emo. In fact they find themselves a little closer to something like American Idiot era Green Day. Ultimately this style advantage works out in their favor and creates a live show environment that goes far beyond what you might find at a typical emo or indie rock show.
Those who are hoping for a bit more of a traditional emo experience, akin to something in the vein of American Football can take solace in knowing that Oso Oso will be supporting Joyce Manor at the glass house. The relatively new emo group has already garnered critical acclaim for both of their albums, and have become a hot commodity. There’s a good chance that a lineup like this isn’t going to last too long if Oso Oso continues on their upward trajectory so be sure to catch them at the Glass House before they’re headlining with the next great band playing the undercard.
