Great bands come around fairly often. But it takes a particular turn of events to make a band actually special. Most bands strive towards art but a couple solid hits and a decent sound palate can carry you pretty far. Algiers however is not one of those bands. Intent to take rock back to it’s black roots while pushing it forward, Algiers has become one of the most exciting, groundbreaking, and fascinating acts in rock music today, fast establishing themselves as an act that will be talked about for generations to come.
The band, based out of Atlanta, Georgia chose the name Algiers in reference to a key historical site of anti-colonial struggle, imbuing their music with a sense of power and importance from the very beginning. They quickly made a name for themselves with their first single “Blood” which showcased their innovative musical stylings by combining rock, blues, soul, noise rock, and gospel all into a single track. This eclectic set of influences and styles became a hallmark of their sound, which successfully pushed a stagnant genre forward while showcasing the deepest part of its roots.
Algiers has announced their upcoming album There is No Year, set to release on January 17th via Matador records. This show at the Echo is a part of the promotional tour for the album and should present an excellent, intimate format in which to see the band and their brand new music. Don’t miss out on a chance to see one of the last great innovative rock bands in a spot like the Echo, the opportunity may not come again for a long time.
