Ladytron has released a short film for their latest single “The Island,” and fans of science fiction (particularly Stranger Things) will certainly enjoy this clip. At just around four minutes long, the short film is a quick and entertaining viewing, soundtracked by the pulsating beats and angelic vocals of Ladytron.
The video is set in sterile warehouses and cargo trailers; in the latter a woman suddenly springs to life, completely naked. Her head is shaved, her pupils are insanely dilated, and she’s covered in a weird goo (think The Matrix). As she wanders away, a close-circuit surveillance camera catches her walking through the warehouse. Naturally, the security guard (or scientist?) isn’t happy about this development, shouting into his walkie talkie and running around frantically.
Soaring shots of a pine forest reveal she’s made it out of the compound as the increasingly stressed guard (and his assistant) drives around in an unmarked van. Just as she leaves the forest, they are able to track her with that bizarre slime, which now has a pink hue. The makes her way to a country home, entering and peering at a similarly-bug-eyed guppy in a fish tank, when she encounters a young man in a Ladytron shirt. Unafraid, he stares at this strange visitor. Suddenly flashing lights appear; the authorities have caught up to our protagonist. She escapes to the city, but what becomes of her from there? No spoilers here, watch the video below to find out.
Bryan M. Ferguson directed the short film, which despite the normalcy of the settings, takes on a very dystopian feeling by the closing. Ferguson is known for his film The Misbehaviour of Polly Paper Cut.
It had been a long seven year wait for new music from Ladytron before they released “The Animals” in February. Along with the new single, they announced they’d be releasing a new album, which was made possible due to a Pledgemusic drive.
