Today on Instagram The Flaming Lips’ frontman Wayne Coyne posted a video revealing that the openers on their 2018 tour, Le Butcherettes, have been covering one of frequent ‘Lips collaborator Miley Cyrus’s biggest hits to date, Wrecking Ball.” The song that became synonymous for it’s at-times over-the-top and certainly meme-worthy music video and still retains some of its original songwriting core, but is transferred into something a lot more aggressive and punk-rock.
Here’s video of the band performing the song at Cleveland, OH’s Agora music venue. As Teri Gender Bender sings the verse and chorus, she floats atop of a sea of bodies who too know the lyrics of the song by heart.
Le Butcherettes are no strangers to opening for big time indie headliners. After the band finishes up their current tour with The Flaming Lips, they’ll hit the road in the fall with Death From Above on that band’s tour celebrating the re-pressing of their debut EP. Before that, the band toured with San Diego garage-hardcore stars Hot Snakes.
It’s been a busy couple of months for the Mexican punk rock band. They announced they had signed with well-respected punk and hardcore label Rise Records, presumably for an upcoming new album. They also dropped a great new song called “spider/WAVES” and then an EP featuring three versions of the single “struggle/STRUGGLE”.
