Matthew Tavares, Chester Hansen, Leland Whitty and Alexander Sowinski better known as Badbadnotgood, is a funky band coming straight out of Toronto that is known for creating interpretations of hip hop tracks that they enjoy listening to. The talent that Tarves on the keys, Hansen on bass, Whitty on the saxaphone, flute, and violin and Sowinski on drums has caught the ears of hip hop acts such Kendrick Lamar, Yasin Bey, Tyler the Creator, Ghostface Killah, Kaytranada and many more to go on and collaborate with the four musicians.
While the four Toronto natives are touring the country, they decided to share some new music to the public. They recently collaborated with Future Island’s lead vocalist Samuel T. Herring, whom they’ve worked with on their song “Time Moves Slow” from their sixth studio album IV last year, on their brand new song “I Don’t Know.” The production from Tarves, Hansen, Whitty and Sowinksi is so soulful plus the rawness from Herring’s voice makes a track like “I Don’t Know” sound like a song similar to legendary singer Bill Withers’ catalog. Herring’s voice matches the pain and emotions that Wither’s displayed on songs like “Ain’t No Sunshine” or “Use Me.” Not to say that Herring’s voice is a powerful as Whither’s, but he matches the same emotions of hurt and frustration that made Whither’s voice recognizable. With Herrings’ melodies of sorrow and Badbadnotgood’s slum mellow music, “I Don’t Know” displays the image of a man walking around unsure of why the terrible things in his life are happening.
