Angelenos, prepare for this one. Portugal. The Man is coming to the UCLA Royce Hall Dec. 12. They will be supported by Electric Guest. Both bands are incredibly enjoyable to listen to. While the show is on a Tuesday, that doesn’t mean it won’t be a fun-filled night. Doors open at 8 pm and tickets are available online between $37 and $58. Tickets are selling fast so hurry and get one while you still can.
Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Portugal. The Man has been an active rock band since 2004. Portugal. The Man originally started off as frontman John Gourley’s side project, with Zack Carothers playing bass. Their name derives from the idea for a book about Gourley’s father. The band also began in Alaska originally, eventually migrating to Oregon after a series of tours that led to them leaving their home state.
Gourley had no previous vocal experience and the band had to use drum tracks before later finding a drummer. Their debut record Waiter: “You Vultures!” was released via Fearless Records in early 2006 with favorable reviews from critics. The next year the band released their sophomore album titled Church Mouth. The album was critically acclaimed, also earning favorable reviews from critics.
After the release, the band went back on tour. They later left their record label and put out their third album, Censored Colors, independently through Approaching AIRballoons, who is partnered with Equal Vision Records. In 2010, their fifth studio album came out, titled American Ghetto. Shortly after, the band signed to Atlantic Records. In 2011, their sixth album, titled In the Mountain in the Cloud was released. Then the band went on tour once again.
Two years later, the band released their sixth studio album, titled Evil Friends. The album received generally favorable reviews from music critics. The album was produced by Danger Mouse. This particular album broke onto the Billboard 200, peaking at number 28. It reached to number 9 on the Top Alternative Albums chart and number 12 on the Top Rock Albums chart.
Four years later, their highly anticipated eighth album Woodstock (2017) came out. The album peaked at number 32 on the Billboard 200, reached to number 7 on the Top Rock Albums chart and reached to number 5 on the Top Alternative Albums chart.
