Angelenos, get ready for Oct. 7 at the Teragram Ballroom. Florida death metal band Obituary are co-headlining the “Battle of the Bays” North American tour alongside the band Exodus. Special guests Power Trip and Dust Bolt will also come along for the ride, but will only be at certain dates. Beginning in North Carolina and ending in Florida, the tour is making a few stops in California but only one in Los Angeles.
Although this particular date won’t have Exodus on the bill, it’ll still be a packed and exciting night. Readers and lovers of hard rock, definitely look out for this show. It’s going to be a banger and tickets are sure to go fast. If they’re already gone by the time this post goes up, don’t worry–there’s a link at the bottom to the Facebook event so you can try to catch anyone selling a ticket.
Prolific in the death metal scene, Obituary began as Executioner in 1986, became Xecutioner, then finally Obituary right before 1989. Around the same time, the band signed to Roadrunner Records and released their first album, titled Slowly We Rot. The band followed up Slowly We Rot with Cause of Death (1990), perhaps the band’s most celebrated and favored album–more crass with a bass heavy mix of the band’s signature sound and guttural vocals, extreme guitar solos and spastic drum patterns.
Obituary has spent almost over two decades releasing some of the influential death metal ever with albums like The End Complete (1992), World Demise (1994), and Frozen in Time (2005), making them one of the genre’s most important bands to recognize. This band paved the way for future death metal bands to come. In 2014, with a five-year gap between albums, the band successfully crowdfunded their next album and subsequently partnered with Relapse Records for the release. The result was Inked In Blood (2014) which received favorable reviews from critics. Two years later the band released a live EP titled Ten Thousand Ways to Die (2016) and followed up with their self-titled tenth studio album, further sealing their influence in the death metal scene.
