Inspire by early 90’s hip hop– somewhat in the vain of the Beastie Boys –the heavily sampled dance beats of pop outfit, TV Girl, make for a unique and identifiable sound, and has won the hearts of fans everywhere. The long-time friendship of Tung Ngo and Brad Petering would become the basis for TV Girl’s inception. However, in 2013 TV Girl would lose Ngo, and become Petering’s solo endeavor. Despite Petering’s self-proclaimed solo status, TV Girl often collaborates with musicians Jason Wyman and Wyatt Harmon when it’s time to tour or record an album.
TV Girl’s debut mixtape, The Wild, The Innocent, The TV Shuffle, released in 2012, and included a downloadable coloring book– fitting TV Girl’s established, playful aesthetic. Following the debut mixtape was 2014’s full-length LP, French Exit, which featured the popular single “Birds Don’t Sing.” French Exit became a cult favorite among fans, and was noted by a limited, 500 copy, reissuing of the vinyl. Earlier this year, TV Girl unexpectedly dropped their second full-length record, Who Really Cares. Following suit of previous releases, the bands signature brand of catchy, hip hop inspired pop songs, was displayed brilliantly– featuring a bevy of new samples, and making for another fun record.
TV Girl will perform next year on January 11th at the Mohawk.
