In an effort to protect users’ listening experience, Spotify has removed 50 million AI tracks from the platform just this year alone, a figure the company shared on their blog, “For The Record”. This is in addition to 75 million other spammy tracks Spotify has removed.
In their blog post titled “One Year In: Putting Human Artistry First on Spotify”, the company stated that “over the past six months, we’ve made numerous updates to our recommendation system to remove slop and spam, and surface more music made by authentic, human artists. Our editors hold the same standard and don’t program content identified as slop or spam.”
We covered one of these new developments. AI Persona Badges, which are displayed on Spotify, mark AI personas across Spotify. This allows users full knowledge of whether or not an artist’s identity is AI-generated. AI Personas are not included in algorithmic recommendations, unless the user follows that artist.
In April, Spotify introduced AI credits, where artists can show which roles within a song were covered by AI. In addition to the changes above, Spotify also verifies artists, provides artist profile protection and tracks monetization eligibility. Variety reports that “YouTube Music last week joined Apple Music and Tidal in introducing labels for AI-powered tracks, while the latter has promised not to allow monetization for any AI-enabled song on its platform.” Although AI develops fast, human made art must always be placed first and foremost.
