Indie rock band The Decemberists have released their first new music in over two years with the new single “The Better Part Of Bravery.” The new track is an original song written for the upcoming stop-motion animated film “Wildwood” by LAIKA, scheduled for an October 23rd release. The song cna be found on the band’s YouTube channel.

Not only does the new release mark the end of a dry spell from the band, but it also represents a full-circle moment for The Decembrists frontman Colin Meloy, as the film is based on his 2011 novel of the same name written by himself and illustrated by Meloy’s wife, acclaimed artist Carson Ellis. “The Better Part Of Bravery” is set to serve as the film’s closing song, also marking the 26th and final song on the film’s soundtrack.

“‘Wildwood’ has been part of my life for many years, and seeing the story transformed like this has been an extraordinary experience,” author and Decembrists frontman Colin Meloy said. “Writing the song for the end credits gave me a chance to return to the world of ‘Wildwood’ in a different way. There’s something particularly meaningful about having music accompany the audience as they leave the forest and the story comes to a close.”

The new song is the first material by the band since 2024’s As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again.

Steven Taylor: Hello, I'm Steven! I'm a graduate of Seton Hall University. I majored in journalism, with a minor in Public Relations. I've always had a passion for the arts and creative fields. Writing especially is an area I've always found myself gravitating towards, between assignments in class, working for the school newspaper or just writing in my spare time. I love providing and hearing new perspectives. In addition to my studies and work in writing, I work part-time at after-school and summer programs for my local elementary school. I've been a part of these programs since I was in high school, and I've even been assigned to work one-to-one with children with special needs. I like to think that if I'm able to communicate well with children in the 2nd grade, then I can communicate well with most adults too!
