Tegan and Sara released a new song and music video with Lights for their new single “Our Year” on Sept. 25. The track was produced by Felix Cartal and the music video was directed by Kyle S. Lee. The song addresses Vancouver’s rising cost of living and provides an outlet for the musicians to express their frustrations with the city’s economic situation while maintaining hope that things will improve.
“Our Year” marks the first piece of music from the duo since their 2022 album Crybaby. The music video showcases Vancouver landmarks including the City Centre Hotel and H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, along with numerous shots of the Vancouver skyline. Tegan and Sara and Lights perform on top of a building throughout the video.
The band also brought Cartal into the video for a cameo, showing him riding a bike around Vancouver.
According to Consequence Sound Tegan sent the demo to Cartal before they recruited Lights for the feature, creating what the musicians described as a Canadian and West Coast alliance.
