Chuck Varga, founding member of the heavy metal band GWAR, died at 68 following a battle with cancer. News of Varga’s passing was shared on Friday, September 25th by GWAR bassist Beefcake the Mighty (real name Casey Orr), as Blabbermouth reports. Varga had been with the theatric costumed band since it’s 1984 founding, taking the role of The Sexecutioner from 1985 up until 2022. Orr stated that Varga had passed peacefully, with his wife Bambi by his side.
“He was one of a kind,” Orr stated in the post. “As an artist, as a performer; as a scholar and a gentleman. I’m better for having known him and the world is lesser for his leaving. He is most likely being welcomed into Valhalla right now by Brockie and Smooty and all who went before. Raise your glass and tell his tales. Legends never die. Hail Varga! Hail Sexecutioner!”
In June, GWAR held fundraiser to aid in covering the expenses for Varga’s care, including treatments and nursing, as well as supporting Bambi while she stepped away from work to care for Varga full-time. The fundraiser included exclusive merchandise created for the campaign, such as a shirt featuring artwork by Varga as well as The Sexecutioner’s axe which had been wielded by Varga’s character for nearly forty years. For his over four decades with the band, Varga was an essential part of GWAR as an artist and a performer, helping to cement the band’s status as one of the most unique acts in heavy metal.
