Ed Sheeran played his first show at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Saturday since Macklemore’s removal from the “LOOP” tour. According to Consequence Sound, Sheeran planned to end the tour after potential security threats, stating:
“I didn’t know whether I’d be safe, or you’d be safe, or things would be thrown at me, or people would boo,” he said.
Sheeran expressed that the controversy left him feeling distraught and wondering if he wanted to be an artist anymore. He even stepped away from performing on stage, saying that the controversy made people turn away from him.
“I really didn’t know whether I’d even be getting on stage again, whether I even wanted to be an artist at all. In these situations, you really find out who your friends are, and it’s been a weird week.”
After Macklemore’s removal, Sheeran wanted to end the tour but eventually decided against it after seeing that fans were still holding on to tickets for his concert in Philadelphia on Saturday night. Sheeran said he played the show for his fans and that those who bought tickets showed that his fans were still supporting him and hadn’t abandoned him after the controversy.
