Seattle-based cowboy punk band Stetson Heat Seeker have unleashed a brand new track entitled “Baker Butcher Maid” from their forthcoming debut album. The record, This Is No Place For Cowards, is set to arrive on September 4.
Speaking on the lyrical context of the track, Katie Cassidy offered, “I wrote this song the morning after the 2024 election. My algorithm that summer and fall was full of trad-wife content and I wanted to write a song that spoke to the complexity of that social media trend in our increasingly conservative political landscape. The lyrics speak to the pleasure I have in partaking in traditionally feminine hobbies like sewing and baking, while also highlighting the anger I feel in the oppressive misogyny clouding our newsfeeds, relationships, politics and daily lives. The lyric: ‘so I think I’ll say fuck you and do the shit that I like’ sums up my general disregard of the patriarchy, while embracing my femininity in a way that feels right to me.”
“Baker Butcher Maid” speaks to many American women’s post-election season frustration. Cassidy’s fiery address of the moment proves punk is the perfect medium for the message. The track kicks off with a rumbling bassline that descends into vigorous guitars and a defiant vocal delivery. The lyrics directly confront and dispel misogynistic expectations of women in modern society, reasserting personhood and individuality as fundamental building blocks of respect. “Baker Butcher Maid” is ultimately as catchy as it is powerful.
