Baba Obscura is set to debut in Seattle’s Pioneer Square November 5 – 8th with The Black Angels, which will take place on six different stages. Celebrating the bands 20th anniversary of their debut album Passover, Provoker, Mdou Moctar and so much more. This is a collaborative production between the founder of Desert Daze Baba Yaga and strategic partnerships with Seattle nonprofits Sonic Guild, Freakout and Paper Plane Music. Obscura is focusing on curating, “places musicians and audiences across a walkable network of historic venues, cultural gathering spaces, and galleries. The inaugural year of Baba Obscura brings together a carefully curated lineup of established artists, emerging voices, and regional talent spanning various genres” (Baba Obscura Press Release). 

Obscura imagined an event that reflects Seattle’s evolving, “independent music ecosystem while connecting with the surrounding community through non-profit partners to cultivate a sustainable creative workforce while strengthening the cultural and economic vitality of the community by providing education, professional development, and economic opportunities for emerging and historically underserved artists” (Baba Obscura Press Release). Baba Yaga’s Ryan Granger says, “As a touring musician, venue owner, and founder of both Baba Obscura and Paper Plane Music, I’ve seen how transformative the right stage, resources and support can be for an artist” … “This is about creating those opportunities and building community while celebrating the independent spirit that makes Seattle’s music scene so special” (Baba Obscura Press Release). This means that Obscura will build on the history that this neighborhood has through a weekend of performances that invite’s audiences to move between all venues and enjoy the neighborhood as an interconnected cultural landscape.
