Florence Welch, known as the monumental artist Florence + The Machine, released the title track, “Everybody Scream,” for her upcoming sixth album, Everybody Scream, set to release on October 31. The single was released with an accompanying music video and follows her last single, “Mermaids”.
“Everybody Scream” begins with an ethereal sound, full of choir and whimsical synth. The song transitions into a pompous rhythm with guitar, bass and passionate harmonizing vocals. Like the rest of the upcoming album, “Everybody Scream” was produced by Welch and a few collaborators, including Mark Bowen of IDLES, who appears in the music video.
Directed by Autumn de Wilde, the accompanying music video features Welch in a red dress marching through a green field, followed by witches to meet a horseman. Welch and the cast enter a dimly lit lounge. As the music crescendoes, the dancers increase their intensity, acting as if they were possessed.
Like the album, the song and the music video reflect Florence’s recovery after needing lifesaving surgery on the Dance Fever Tour. Florence was taken down a spiritual path with witchcraft and folk horror as she felt the limits of her body and explored what it is to be “healed”. According to a press release, the album touches on themes of womanhood, partnership, aging and dying.
