Orthodox brings jarring and mind-blowing music on A Door Left Open.
Metalcore band Orthodox was formed in 2011 and the lineup consists of lead vocalist Adam Easterling, guitarists Austin Evans and Ben Touchberry, bass guitarist Shiloh Krebs and drummer Mike White. They are known for their wild music and last month, Orthodox released A Door Left Open. As a whole, each track is fabulous because of how the in-your-face music and vocal performance fill the atmosphere with mind-bending sound. Yes, the band is metalcore but A Door Left Open does have a strong kick of death metal, which is a wonderful thing.
Kicking things off is “Save Me.” What shines brightly on this number is the chaotic guitar playing. Right off the bat, the sound of angry and surging guitar riffs welcomes listeners to Orthodox’s maddening world before switching to a faster and headbanging musical tempo. “Save Me” is a loud composition that features soul-shaking guitar playing.
Another face-smacking number is “Dread Weight” and what is fabulously great about the track is hearing the vocalist grumble out the deep lyrics. While listening, Easterling’s vocal power brings an extra kick of grunge and madness with each shriek, while the instrumentation shakes the background with a heavy metal and grunge vibe. Each vocal growl and shriek contributes to the “Dread Weight” dark and demanding style of insanity.
“Keep Your Blessings” is a straight-up example of what metalcore and death metal sound like together. Right at the start, fast-paced and sharp instrumentation starts to wreak havoc in the dark atmosphere, while the vocalist powerfully yells out the deep lyrics. Everything on “Keep Your Blessings” is filled with jamming instrumentation that can cause some people to head-bang along as the music continues to blare from their speakers. Also, the drum solo right in the middle of the tune shows how talented White is as a musician.
“Step Inside” is a pulsing number that displays a heavier thrash metal side of Orthodox but what really shines is hearing the lead guitarists masterfully shredding their guitars. The noises of razor-sharp guitar riffs can be heard generating a Metallica-like vibe, while Easterling bleeds the ears with his high-pitched voice. The guitar playing alone on “Step Inside” shows just how the musicians are not afraid to show their blazing and talented musical skills.
For those who enjoy loud and surging music, Orthodox’s A Door Left Open can fulfill the need of wanting to hear bombastic music, thanks to the sizzling instrumentation and vocal performance. Orthodox have been in the music for a good while and this album is a successful testament to how much they have musically grown.
