AEG Presents and Activision joined forces for an epic celebration of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4, with the THPS Fest. The night was hosted in the iconic El Rey Theatre, which is featured in the game, on May 8.
Fans were able to tune in on Twitch to witness the incredible night packed with interviews with Tony Hawk and others, and performances by legendary bands featured on the game’s soundtrack such as Danny Brown, Lupe Fiasco, Adolescents, and Urethane. Fans were also treated to the surprise reveal of new game details. THPS celebrated Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 and the franchise’s impact on skate culture.
What makes this more fun, Activision and developer Iron Galaxy Studio meticulously recreated the famous El Rey Theatre in the Los Angeles level of the game. Players will also spot nods to California’s vibrant music scene, with Goldenvoice, the premiere California promoter and subsidiary of AEG Presents, and The Roxy, one of LA’s most storied and celebrated venues, featured on in-game billboards throughout the Los Angeles level of the game.
Doors opened at 6 o’clock for all guests. Directly in the entrance of the venue was a throne built with various skate decks all assembled to appear as a hawk with its wings flared. A gameplay lounge was open for THPS 3 + 4 on the second floor. Skaters of all levels, beginners to Olympic professionals, gathered on couches and bean bag chairs around six television screens for a chance to play. The main floor held various brand partner activations. On the left corner of the venue, there was a booth with free Frosted Flakes cereal with Tony Hawk on the box. A Tony The Tiger mascot roamed around the venue taking pictures with everyone. Next followed a spread of free Taco Bell for everyone to enjoy. Across the venue was a Neckface and Depop collaborative merchandise, those who attended were able to pick a custom piece for free.
At 8 o’clock Tony Hawk welcomed everyone and introduced Urethane who kicked off the live concert series. Adolescents took the stage and of course the entire venue went insane during their performance of “Amoeba,” their iconic THPS soundtrack. Next followed Danny Brown whose song “uknowhatimsayin¿” will be reportedly featured in the upcoming THPS video game. Lupe Fiasco closed out the night with performances of nearly all of his including his featured song “Kick, Push.” During his performance of “The Show Goes On,” Tony The Tiger made another special appearance, this time as a cardboard cutout. The artist Neckface was seen dancing with the cutout in the crowd, catching Fiasco’s attention and asking for the cutout to be brought to the stage. During the climax of the song, Fiasco went a little too intense waving the cutout around, breaking it in half. Even though each artist’s setlist was short, each performance was incredible. Everyone who took the stage shared a moment with the crowd to recognize the legend that is Tony Hawk.
The second-floor balcony held all the television screens that displayed every camera angle for the live stream. Special guests such as Bam Margera made an appearance for various interviews and the announcement of his character’s return to THPS 3 + 4. Other professional skateboarders who attended the event included Shane O’Neill, Rodney Mullen, Lizzie Armanto, Margielyn Didal, Nora Vasconcellos (who will be featured in the game), and Rune Glifberg. Actor and skateboarder Fabian Alomar and singer-songwriter Cuco also attended the event.
