Julie and the Fcukers joined forces for a sold-out show on April 16 at The Glass House in Pomona. The two took part in this year’s Coachella lineup and surprised fans with a local performance between their Coachella shows.
The Fcukers opened the night with an incredible performance. The group was quick to turn the intimate venue into a nightclub ambiance, darkening the room with only their stage lights illuminating the venue through reflections bouncing from the disco ball that hangs in the center of the Glass House’s tall ceiling. Not a single person could stay still as every note that the Fcukers played held everyone in some sort of trans.
Front-woman Shanny Wise, DJ Jackson Walker Lewis, and drummer Ben Scharf immediately commanded the crowd with their infectious early 2000’s beats. Every member engaged with luring energy as Wise hopped and danced around the stage throughout the set and Lewis jumped out during every drop hyping the crowd. Wise’s soft vocals fascinated the crowd during hits like “Bon Bon” and “Tommy.”
For a Coachella act, julie really needs to get their shit together. Granted this band is still relatively new having released their debut album My Anti-Aircraft Friend on September 13, 2024. Keyan Pourzand, Alex Brady and Dillon Lee appeared to have a lot of internal issues on stage. Nearly every other song during the second half of their set included some sort of nasty looks from vocalist Pourzand. Things got heated to the point that Pourzand, with an irritated look on his face, stomped his way towards drummer Lee but bassist Brady pulled Pourzand back to center stage.
After a nearly 30-minute intermission and one of the most exhausting classical songs playing as the stage crew set up julie’s stage, the crowd began to lose interest. Finally, the lights began to flicker and the band made their way to the stage. Without wasting any more time julie kicked off their set with “Catalogue.” The shoegaze band’s set began to blend and the band’s nonchalant attitude drove attention away. The crowd was a thousand times more entertaining than the band on stage. Julie’s music is decent, nothing impressive, but their lack of audience interaction and stage presence is troubling so much so that a good chunk of the crowd began to walk out before the band had even finished their 10th song out of a 14-track setlist.
Though julie was a letdown, the night was not so terrible. Fcukers made their mark with a great performance.
