Pras Michel, a founding member of the legendary hip-hop group The Fugees, has announced he is stepping away from the group as he awaits sentencing in an ongoing federal case. The rapper and producer, known for hits like “Ready or Not” and “Killing Me Softly,” declared his decision to part ways, signaling the end of his involvement with the iconic trio. NME reports that due to Michel’s current legal trouble, he is unable to join his long time bandmates on their upcoming tour which was a motivating factor in the artists sudden departure from the group.
The move comes as Pras, 51, faces legal troubles stemming from his alleged role in an international money laundering scheme. Prosecutors have alleged that Pras acted as an unregistered foreign agent, funneling millions of dollars from a Malaysian financier into U.S. political campaigns. Pras has maintained his innocence throughout the trial but was convicted earlier this year on multiple charges. Sentencing is expected in the coming months.
The Fugees, formed in the early 1990s with Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean, became one of the most influential groups in hip-hop, earning international acclaim with their 1996 album The Score. While fans had hoped for a full reunion, including a postponed 25th-anniversary tour, Pras’ legal issues have overshadowed those plans.
The departure comes almost two months after Michel had filed a lawsuit against long time bandmate,
Lauryn Hill for alleged funds missing from their 2023 tour.
As he steps away from the group, Pras’ decision marks the end of an era for The Fugees, whose impact on music remains unparalleled.
