Bob Marley’s “Punky Reggae Party” was originally released back in 1977. Now, almost 50 years later, Island Records has shared a new music video for the beloved track to celebrate the 2024 limited edition release of Marley’s album Exodus.
The new music video, directed by graphic artist Maxime Manga, uses classic photos of Marley and footage from his Boston performance in 1978 to match the flow of the song. It brings the iconic song to life in a new way, portraying seven minutes of the blissful, groovy energy Marley brought to his music and performances.
This special release of Exodus was unveiled earlier this month by Island Records. The album’s impact has extended across the globe, and was cited by Time Magazine as the Best Album of the 20th Century, according to a recent press release.
The new edition includes the original album cover and a 10″ LP featuring rare bonus tracks and an essay written by Jamaican historian, Herbie Miller. According to a recent press release, he writes, “Exodus is a timeless document that publicly reveals the contemplations and reflections on the life of one of the 20th century’s most revered artists and revolutionaries. It shows Bob’s fears and vulnerability, his steadfast commitment to making humanity as equitable and ideal as imaginable and spreading his Rastafari spirituality to the four corners of the earth.”
The limited edition of Exodus is a celebration in and of itself, but it also marks the release of Marley’s long awaited biopic, Bob Marley: One Love, which is now available on all streaming platforms, as well as on Blu-Ray and DVD.
