Judas Priest at Prudential Center on April 19

Judas Priest is an English heavy metal band formed in Birmingham in 1969. In their nearly 60 years as a band, they have sold over 50 million albums and are frequently ranked as one of the greatest metal bands of all time.

Judas Priest’s iconography of leather and spikes was widely influential during the glam metal era of the 1980s. They have been aligned with the definition of a true heavy metal band. The Guardian once referred to British Steel as the record that defines heavy metal. Judas Preist’s vocal stylings have had a very heavy influence on other metal bands. They were ranked by MTV as the second “Greatest Metal Band” of all time, after Black Sabbath, and in 2022, Judas Priest was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Judas Priest’s style has always been rooted in heavy metal, and many of their albums have influences from other aspects of the genre. Their debut album, Rocka Rolla, is primarily rooted in heavy blues rock. When they released their fifth album, Killing Machine, the band started to incorporate a more commercial and radio-friendly style into their songs.

Lead vocalist Halford states his main influences are Little Richard, Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, and Robert Plant. His powerful operatic vocals show his impressive range, from growls to high-pitch vibrato.
