David Longstreth of Dirty Projectors presents Song of the Earth, a suite for orchestra and voices, on March 2 at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Special guest Mount Eerie opens, and Dirty Projectors will also perform a set from across their discography for their first show in four years!
The Los Angeles Philharmonic announced a one-night-only concert featuring David Longstreth of Dirty Projectors presenting Song of the Earth, a suite for orchestra and voices, at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at 8PM. The piece will be performed by Dirty Projectors and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by Sarah Hicks, with special guest Mount Eerie. In addition, the evening will include Dirty Projectors performing a separate set of songs from throughout their career.
Song of the Earth, which will be receiving its American premiere with the LA Phil, grew out of an engagement with Gustav Mahler’s 1908 orchestral song cycle, Das Lied Von Der Erde (The Song of the Earth). Where Mahler’s union of symphonic and song forms was a meditation—by turns joyous, angst-ridden and wistful—on the cyclical character of life and death, nature and the transience of all things, Longstreth explores these themes through the lens of the Anthropocene. Song of the Earth was commissioned by the London Barbican and the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie in coordination with the Helsinki Festival.
Longstreth is a Grammy-nominated songwriter, producer and composer. With his band Dirty Projectors, he’s played most of the major music festivals in the world, as well as Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, the Barbican in London and Kunsthalle in Berlin, and countless other venues of lesser repute. Longstreth studied classical composition at Yale University, and has worked in a scored medium for as long as he’s been writing and recording songs. He’s composed pieces for contemporary classical ensembles including Music and Bang On A Can. In addition to 10 albums with Dirty Projectors, Longstreth has collaborated with Solange, Bjork and David Byrne among others, and co-wrote “FourFive Seconds,” a No. 1 international hit for Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney. He is currently scoring two films for orchestra and piano for A24 Films.
