Amber Mary Bain known professionally as The Japanese House, is an English indie pop musician from Buckinghamshire. Bain plays the guitar and keyboard along with singing for her projects. In 2012, she decided to start writing music under the name The Japanese House, after she was put in contact with lead singer of the 1975, Matty Healy.
There has always been a level of gender ambiguity within her music due to Bain’s androgynous vocals, heavy use of production, and elusive media presence. Her first two EPs are rooted in synth-pop with some elements of dream pop, folktronica, and electropop. Bain’s moniker, The Japanese House, comes from her desire to not be defined by gender and to avoid the public as much as possible. The name itself is inspired by a property in Cornwall, England in which she and her family had vacationed during her childhood.
Bain’s style developed and by the time of the release of her third EP, Swim Against the Tide, she was leaning into 80s synth, and her fourth EP, Saw You in a Dream, saw her continued experimentation with different genres of electronica and rock. Her first full-length album Good at Falling was released in 2019 and was co-produced with George Daniel and American record producer BJ Burton.
