The Front Bottoms are an American rock band from Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, formed in 2006. The band is a duo with lead vocalist Brian Sella and drummer Mat Uychich, however, they are joined by a touring band for live performances. Currently, they are accompanied by guitarist and backing vocalist AJ Peacox, bassist and backing vocalist Natalie Newbold, and bassist, guitarist, and backing vocalist Erik Kase Romero.
The Front Bottoms, not to mince words, is a euphemism for vagina. Frontman Sella said in an interview with Vice “This is our name. If you don’t like it then you don’t like it.” Their genre has been described as indie rock, folk punk, and indie/acoustic pop. The Front Bottoms have drawn inspiration from bands such as Blink-182, Say Anything, and Bright Eyes. Sella stated in an interview once that they are often inspired by New Jersey itself: “New Jersey is definitely an inspiration because that’s where I grew up. It’s also where I went to college, which was a big point in my life where I was developing my artistic style.”
The Front Bottoms’ first performances took place in the dorm rooms of Ramapo College during the late 2000s. Sella has been stated saying he remembers a specific night when he and Uychich played an acoustic set for about a half-dozen students in his girlfriend’s dorm room, which was covered in glow-in-the-dark tape.
