John Legend is an American singer and songwriter from Springfield, Ohio, known for his smooth R&B sound. Before he was the frontman, his musical career was taking off behind the scenes. Legend played the piano for Miss. Lauryn Hill’s “Everything Is Everything” and made an appearance on Jay-Z’s “Encore” and Alicia Keys’ “You Don’t Know My Name.” His debut album, Get Lifted, was released in 2004 under Kanye West’s GOOD Music record label, being the first artist outside of Kanye himself to be signed to the label. After signing to GOOD Music he began going by “Legend,” a moniker that was given to him by poet J. Ivy because his music reminded him of something old school.
Over the years, Legend has accrued 31 Grammy nominations and 12 Grammy awards. John Legend has collaborated with many prolific artists such as The Roots, with whom he recorded his fourth studio album Wake Up in 2010. This album resulted in possibly his most known hit, “All of Me.” The song peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and has since then been awarded Diamond status and 14X Platinum.
Outside of releasing highly acclaimed records, Legend has received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his acting role, and won for his role as a producer of the show. He has also won a Tony Award for co-producing Jitney for the Broadway stage and portrayed Jesus Christ in NBC’s adaptation of the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar. Legend won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and Golden Globe Award in 2015 for co-writing the song “Glory” from the film Selma. All of these awards have earned him the title of EGOT; making him the first black man and second youngest person to have won all four of the major American entertainment awards: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.
