Gogol Bordello is an American punk rock band from the Lower East Side of Manhattan, formed in 1999 by musicians from all over the world. Over the years the band has been made up of over 20 members. They are known to have a very theatrical stage presence and since the beginning, have been touring consistently. Their main sound is inspired by Romani music mixed with punk and dub, incorporating accordion and violin.
The name comes from Nikolai Gogol, a classical Ukrainian writer who has served as an influence for their ideology of integrating Ukrainian culture into Russian society, which is what Gogol Bordello intends to do with Romani/East-European music in the Western, English-speaking world. The second half of the name comes from the Italian word for brothel or gentlemen’s club.
Gogol Bordello released their first single in 1999 and has since then released six studio albums and one EP. They have toured all over Europe and America, making appearances at several international festivals. Notable artists that they have performed with include Primus, Flogging Molly, and Cake.
They have been very vocal about the Russian invasion of Ukraine and since 2022, Gogol Bordello has been involved in several efforts to raise relief funds for victims.
