Child actress turned indie-rock star Jenny Lewis is setting off on her most recent tour following the release of her 2023 album, Joy’All. The official tour will kick off in Chicago on July 7 at The Salt Shed.
Jenny Lewis was born in Las Vegas to parents involved in the entertainment industry. As a child, she began her career acting in commercials and over a dozen teen movies throughout the 80s and 90s. By 1998, she had pivoted to music, forming the indie-rock band Rilo Kiley with her boyfriend at the time, Blake Sennott. The band disbanded in 2014, but not before Lewis made her first mark on the twee scene of the early 2000s.
After the split of Rilo Kiley, Lewis was able to find success venturing out on her own. Although she had previously released two solo albums while still a member of the band, her 2014 album The Voyager reflected on the break-up of the band as well as several challenges in Lewis’s own personal life. The album was praised by critics for Lewis’s top notch lyrics and emotional production by Ryan Adams.
More recently, Lewis has collaborated with various names in the industry, including Elvis Costello and the Imposters, Vampire Weekend, Snow Patrol, and She & Him. Last year, she accompanied Harry Styles on his “Love on Tour” tour as an opening act.
In the band and in her solo career, Lewis’s music has always fused aspects of indie rock, country, alternative music, folk, and Americana. The artist has been likened to an older sister of the millennial generation, offering comforting advice and observations on life through her music. Her newest album, Joy’All, leans more into her country singer-songwriter sound. This allows for Lewis to do what she does best: convey her message through her sharp and uplifting lyrics accompanied by a guitar.
