Julian Marley, the ninth child of Bob Marley, was born in London on June 4, 1975. Raised in Jamaica and England, he quickly joined the family company and showed a natural talent for the guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards. He lived in Miami for a while during his adolescence, where the Marley family’s studio, Lion’s Den, helped him hone his artistic skills.
Julian Marley followed a career in music, following in the footsteps of his father, legendary reggae artist Bob Marley, and a number of his siblings before him. He established himself as a mainstay in the reggae scene as a singer, composer, producer, and collaborator. Julian, who was talented on several instruments from an early age, joined the Ghetto Youth Crew and collaborated with the Marley brothers Stephen, Damian, and Ky-Mani before making his own solo debut, Lion in the Morning, in 1996. With the release of the highly acclaimed album Awake in 2009, which received a Grammy nomination, Julian’s solo career achieved an entirely new height. He currently tours the world with his backup band, the Uprising, as well as with several other Marley family-related projects. His compositions, many of which are about social justice, kindness, and spirituality are promoted by the dedicated Rastafaria. It can be heard on Colors of Royal (2023).
